Background of the Study
Accurate attendance monitoring is a cornerstone of academic management, yet traditional methods are often plagued by errors, proxy attendance, and administrative inefficiencies. At Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Bauchi LGA, the design and implementation of a smart attendance system using RFID technology is proposed to address these challenges. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) systems offer a rapid and reliable means of tracking the presence of students and staff by using tags and readers to automatically record attendance data (Chinwe, 2023; Musa, 2024). The system integrates with the institution’s existing databases to provide real‑time attendance records and generate analytical reports that can inform administrative decisions. By automating the attendance process, the RFID system reduces human error and eliminates the possibility of proxy marking, ensuring a higher level of accuracy and accountability. The smart system is designed to be user‑friendly and scalable, capable of accommodating a growing student population and integrating seamlessly with other digital systems such as examination scheduling and resource allocation. The continuous data capture enables real‑time monitoring of attendance patterns, allowing for prompt interventions in cases of absenteeism. Despite the clear advantages, the adoption of RFID technology also presents challenges, including initial implementation costs, data privacy concerns, and the need for technical support and training. Pilot projects in similar academic settings have shown that RFID systems can significantly enhance administrative efficiency and improve overall attendance management (Okafor, 2024). This study explores how the integration of RFID technology can transform attendance tracking at Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, ensuring accurate data collection and supporting better decision‑making processes.
Statement of the Problem
Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, currently relies on manual attendance methods that are inefficient, error‑prone, and susceptible to proxy attendance. These traditional practices result in inaccurate records, which adversely affect student discipline and overall institutional management. Although RFID‑based smart attendance systems have the potential to provide real‑time, accurate monitoring, their implementation faces several obstacles. Key issues include the high initial cost of RFID infrastructure, integration challenges with existing academic systems, and concerns over data security and privacy. Additionally, staff and students may exhibit resistance to new technology due to a lack of familiarity and apprehensions regarding system reliability. The current gap between manual and automated attendance systems not only undermines operational efficiency but also compromises the integrity of academic records. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of an RFID‑based attendance system in addressing these issues. By analyzing system performance, user acceptance, and data accuracy, the research aims to identify critical barriers and propose practical solutions to ensure a smooth transition to a smart attendance environment. The findings will contribute to a more efficient administrative process, enabling real‑time tracking and improved accountability, ultimately leading to enhanced academic management (Chinwe, 2024).

The findings will offer a roadmap for digital transformation in attendance management, benefiting both staff and students (Musa, 2024).
